It was a pleasant, winter morning, the kind with a lovely breeze flowing all around. Sudhir was waiting to get into the elevator in a plush lobby, of his company’s brand new office building. Everything looked grand in this new edifice & this made Sudhir feel empowered to accomplish the tasks for the day. Adding to that, the vitalizing feel of his top-floor office space only made him smile from ear to ear. As the company’s real estate manager, he sure felt proud at his choice of the new premises.
As the elevator door opened, a superb ray of light filled Sudhir’s eyes. He stared at the magnificence of it. The interiors of the building’s elevators showcased intricate work of beautiful designs. There were crystal glasses on the walls, which gave the elevator an amazingly vast feel.
As Sudhir stepped forward to go inside, a hand stopped him. Sudhir looked at the lift man, who stopped him from getting into the lift. “Full.” came a pithy reply from the lift man. Sudhir looked at the people standing inside. There were five of them, including the lift man. Five, in all. The elevator’s all fancy, royal look, seemed to fade into the background of its poor carrying capacity, in Sudhir’s mind now. He pouted and moved outside to wait for a second round of lift.
Days went by and this small incident seemed to have escaped Sudhir’s mind. This was till today. The office was abuzz with panic. A senior employee of his company, Mr. Das, had just gotten struck by a severe chest-pain. He lay in a state of hand-to-his-chest on the ground, unable to move at all.
Sudhir led a team of four junior employees, who were carrying a semi-conscious Mr. Das in their arms, to the elevator. As the doors of the elevator clinked open, Sudhir stared at it yet again this time. Only now, he felt belittled by the cramped up space of this super-decorated, little lift. There was no way they could have all fit in. The lift man politely offered to help but that wouldn’t have sufficed either.
Mr. Das was in no state to stand or walk down the stairs. A hapless group of the junior employees struggled to carry Mr. Das down the stairs now. Sudhir walked down behind them. He looked as frail as poor Mr. Das. ‘The little things we neglect can have really big consequences on life...’ thought a disappointed Sudhir.
